Whales and Pelé motivate student learning
Students learn better when they are having fun and motivated by the topic, and MTC tutors are exceptional at finding the spark that ignites a student’s desire to learn. Some of the sparks MTC tutors have discovered include dinosaurs, trains, humor, India, the arctic, whales, cooking and outer space. One tutor discovered her student loves professional soccer, so she got a book about Pelé which instantly motivated his reading!
Remote tutoring offers a unique icebreaker… when an adorable lab pokes his head in the camera or a cat saunters across the keyboard, there’s laughter and excitement. The tutor can take this opportunity to bond with the student—learning more about the student’s own pets or favorite animals and finding related books.
One of MTC’s math tutors used his student’s passion for sports to engage him in math lessons. Catching up on the student’s latest team (scores, ranking, etc.) makes for a fun way to start each tutoring session. The tutor and student find that the concepts are easier to understand when applied to a familiar subject, and it is definitely more fun!
